SQL0104 Token not valid

IBM message text
Token &1 was not valid. Valid tokens: &2.
SQLCODE
-104
SQLSTATE
42601

Most common cause

Syntax error: a missing or extra comma, unbalanced parentheses, a keyword in the wrong place. The message gives the token and a partial list of valid ones; the error can also be before the token.

Other causes

  • A reserved word used as a name without double quotes.
  • A trailing semicolon in a statement run with PREPARE or EXECUTE IMMEDIATE.
  • Syntax the system's release or TR level does not have yet.

How to fix it

Look around the token given. If the token is <END-OF-STATEMENT>, the statement ends with an incomplete clause. Reserved words go in double quotes; for recent functions check release and TR.
