Most common cause
A function is called with too many or too few arguments.
Other causes
- Syntax taken from another database (SQL Server, Oracle) with a different signature.
- A user-defined function with that signature is not found on the path.

Check the function's signature in the Db2 for i documentation for your release; for a user function, check the path and parameters.
