What it brought
- Announced in January 2008 as i5/OS V6R1; during 2008 i5/OS is renamed IBM i, and V5R4 and V6R1 become 5.4 and 6.1
- The internal format of programs (*MODULE, *PGM, *SRVPGM, *SQLPKG) changes: moving to 6.1 they have to be converted, and the ANZOBJCVN command helps to prepare
- Encryption of data on disk (encrypted ASPs) and of backups, manageable from BRMS too
- IBM i as a client partition with virtual I/O, hosted by another IBM i partition or by VIOS; it reaches Power6 blades
- IBM Systems Director Navigator for i: a browser-based management interface
- RPG: THREAD(*CONCURRENT), the cycle-free program with MAIN, files declared inside procedures and passed as parameters
- Library journaling and journaling started automatically
- Much wider intrusion detection and prevention, and new security system values
- 64-bit Java with IBM Technology for Java, and Integrated Web Services for i
- Spooled files are converted to a new format: listing them all no longer blocks those creating or printing

- All Power5 and Power6 systems, and the 9406 models 800, 810, 825, 870 and 890
