What it brought
- Announced in January 2006 together with the new System i5 models with Power5+ processors (520, 550, 570 and 590)
- I/O adapters that do not need an I/O processor (IOP)
- RAID6 alongside RAID5 for disk protection, and virtual tape
- Network intrusion detection and wider hardware storage protection
- Enterprise Extender (SNA over IP) and the expanded LAN console, with the Thin Console alternative
- RPG: EVAL-CORR, XML-INTO and XML-SAX with %XML and %HANDLER
- Zend's PHP on i5/OS, and iSCSI attachment of BladeCenter and xSeries servers
- Integrated Web Application Server and 32-bit IBM Technology for Java, introduced with 5.4
