- Lotus Domino for AS/400 (Domino 4.6), with direct access to the DB2/400 database
- Java integrated beneath the Machine Interface, with AS/400 Developer Kit for Java
- AS/400 NetServer: Windows PCs see the system's files and printers from Network Neighborhood, with no extra software
- SQL: ANSI and ISO SQL procedures, CASE, CAST and POSITION, and a new query optimizer
- The kernel threads model, used by Domino and Java
- DRDA over TCP/IP and Windows NT Server integration on the Integrated PC Server
- TCP/IP over twinax cabling too
- RPG: variable-length fields, %EOF, %FOUND, %EQUAL and %OPEN instead of indicators, %CHAR and %REPLACE
